Seminole Heights Losses Two Businesses to Fire: the Landmark, Tampa Bay Hardware, and Sullivan Holster Shop

TAMPA- June 9, 2008 - Sunday late afternoon saw the end of a sixty-five year old hardware store, the oldest hardware store in the city of Tampa and one of the family-owned landmarks of Seminole Heights.
They called it a three-alarm blaze and it destroyed the building at 5511 N Nebraska Avenue very quickly requiring the work of more than 50 firefighters and about an hour to control. Damage is estimated at more than $1-million.
Tampa Bay Hardware opened in 1941. According to a Tribune story published May 22, the store's owner, Tom Roberts, bought the property in the early 1970s, a few years after Interstate 75 — now I-275 — cut Seminole Heights in two, causing families to move away and the neighborhood to wither. But with the recent revitalization of
neighborhood, the store was one of the few places you could go to find those more unusual parts for historic bungelows.
Sullivan's Holster Shop was located at the rear of Tampa Bay Hardware. That buisiness has been lost as well. The owners, Greg & Fran Gutchers, indicated to a neighbor that it was a total loss and that they would relocate.
The business community extends it's deepest regrets for the loss of this establishment and our deepest sympathies to Tom Roberts and Greg & Fran Gutchers for their loss and the loss to the whole neighborhood.
On behalf of the membership
The BGoSH Board of Directors would like to extend a personal Thank You to Jay McGee and New Heights Magazine who provided this web site from BGoSH's beginnings until April 2008
